About Sonja Seyfort
Born and raised in Victoria, Sonja has 39 years experience coaching and training at several of the stables in Victoria. “I feel fortunate to be able to work within the horse community on Lower Vancouver Island for such a long period of time.”

Sonja began her first 9 years of her formal horse training & competitions under the direction of Bo Mearns, International Show Jump Rider. “Over the 9 years Bo continually taught me that patience, consistency and individualizing training programs are the key to a confident competition show horse.”

Previously Sonja successfully competed in the Hunters in the Pacific Northwest. Students continued her competition enthusiasm and success in the Hunter/Jumper show rings: Thunderbird, Southlands, Milner Downs, Lake Tahoe, Thermal and Arizona. “It is exciting to watch the horse & rider skills we have been developing at home step into the competition ring!”

Sonja has studied coaching techniques through Canada’s National Coaching Certificate Program (NCCP), International Coaching School, Petro-Canada Sport Leadership Sportif Conferences and the University of Calgary. These include: NCCP Learning Evaluators Stream, Competition – Development, Equine Canada High Performance 1 Training and Decision Training – New Approach to Coaching. Currently Sonja assists coaches preparing for the revised NCCP coaching streams.
“I am passionate about the sport and the direction it is going! Equestrian Canada’s development of the Long Term Equestrian Development (LTED) and the direct connection to the EC Rider Level 1 – 10 Program. With the revision of the NCCP Streams: Instructor, Competition Coach, Competition Coach Specialist and High Performance coaches and riders are able to select the direction best suits their needs at the time. This is now the model for all sports in Canada”

“Many thanks to family, friends, coaches, professors and the many clients over the years! ~ Sonja Seyfort
