About Sonja Seyfort

Born and raised in Victoria, Sonja has 37 years experience coaching and training at several of the stables in Victoria. She started the first 9 years of her horse training/competition career under the direction of Bo Mearns, International Show Jump Rider. “Over the 9 years Bo continually taught me that patience, consistency and individualizing training programs are the key to a confident competition show horse.”

Formerly Sonja has successfully competed in the Hunters in the Pacific Northwest. Students continue that competitive enthusiasm and success in both the Show Jumpers & Hunters on Vancouver Island at, Thunderbird, Southlands, Milner Downs and Arizona. “It is very exciting watching the horses & riders take the skills we have been developing at home and step into the competition ring.”

Sonja continues studies in coaching concepts through Canada’s National Coaching Certificate Program (NCCP), the International Coaching School, and the University of Calgary Decision Training. NCCP courses completed include: NCCP Learning Evaluators Stream, NCCP Level 3 theory, NCCP Coach 4 tasks, Competition – Development and Equestrian Canada High Performance

“I am passionate about the sport and the direction it is going! Equestrian Canada’s development of the Long Term Equestrian Development (LTED) and the direct connection to the EC Rider Level 1 – 8 Program. Also exciting is the new coaching licensing system; Instructing Beginners, Competition Coach, Competition Coach Specialist and High Performance. Riders will be able to select the coach that best suits their needs. This is now the model for all sports in Canada”

“Many thanks to family, friends, coaches, professors and the many clients over the years! ~ Sonja Seyfort
